Predicting a Future That is Also the Past. The Cycle of Yugas
The Yuga cycle was discovered by the wisdom seekers of the ancient civilizations of India. It provides a way of dividing vast stretches of time into particular ages, or Yugas, which appear in a fixed, sequential rotation, each one expressing a certain co-emergent pattern of human and planetary affairs. This succession of Yugas repeats without end, and we can make use of it today to understand where we have been and where we are going. In this way, it can provide a time-tested prediction of both our immediate and long-term future.
Each complete Yuga cycle lasts 25,800 years. In each cycle, a Golden Age of illumination and harmony, the Satya Yuga, devolves incrementally to a dark age of ignorance and strife, the Kali Yuga, only to once again begin the gradual ascent to the next Satya Yuga. Thus each cycle encompasses both the farthest extremes of human consciousness, from highest to lowest, and everything in between.
Each complete Yuga cycle contains eight Yugas, or ages, of 2700 years each. Between each Yuga is a 300-year transition period, where cataclysmic Earth events destroy the civilization of the preceding age, allowing a new civilization to spring up at the beginning of the next. However, the transition period after the extremes of both the illuminated Satya Yuga and the unenlightened Kali Yuga is much longer, 1200 years. It seems that these most extreme of ages require a more extreme cleansing before the next Yuga can emerge.
In his book Yuga Shift, Bibhu Dev Misra describes his research into the ancient wisdom of the Yugas, as well as extensive research in astronomy, archeology and geology. He has found wide-ranging scientific evidence backing up the past and future events predicted by the Yuga cycle, and by synthesizing all this information has been able to place our current times within the cycle of the Yugas.
He tells us that we are presently right at the end of the Kali Yuga, which is the darkest and most bestial of ages. Thus we are currently facing the imminent destruction of our civilization, and as if that were not enough, a 1200 year transition period before the next civilization can arise. These are somber times indeed.
At the very end of the Kali Yuga, human consciousness reaches its absolute lowest, least enlightened state. The human lifespan, physical stature, intelligence and wisdom are at their lowest point. In its utter moral and spiritual bankruptcy, consciousness touches rock bottom, ravaged by the dominant emotions of greed, selfishness and hatred. Conversely, technology and material comfort reach their highest expression at the end of the age, but the huge gap between matter and spirit results in violence, oppression, cruelty, injustice and widespread mental health issues. The superficial glitz of technological accomplishments blinds us to the great spiritual emptiness of the age, and we ask ourselves why we feel so troubled when we have such material ease, not understanding that true happiness can never lie in material wealth.
Bibhu Dev Misra tells us that according to his calculations, the current Kali Yuga will end in March 2025, and the 1200-year transition to the next age, the Dwapara Yuga, will then begin. This means that in our very immediate future are cataclysmic Earth events which will destroy our civilization and plunge us into chaos. We will experience the confusion and disarray of the absence of a coherent civilizational structure on an Earth that has been battered and changed beyond recognition. Only at the end of that grueling time will we emerge into the light of the Dwapara Yuga, ushering us into a new dawn of illuminated consciousness. Only then will a new civilization start to emerge, one that faithfully reflects this newly illumined state.
Bibhu Dev Misra has determined that the Earth cataclysms at the end of each Yuga are associated with the Earth’s passage through the core of the Taurid meteor stream. Earth actually passes harmlessly through the margins of this stream twice per year, in the northern summer and fall. These margins contain tiny meteors, almost all of which burn up in the atmosphere, creating meteor showers visible from Earth. However, every 3000 years Earth passes through the core of the stream, which contains larger bodies including comets. Some of these larger bodies can impact Earth, creating enormous destruction.
Archeology and geology show that every 3000 years civilizations across the world collapse completely during destructive Earth events, and then emerge again after a 300-year transition period. For example, geological studies show that 11700 years ago, at the end of the last Satya Yuga and the beginning of the Holocene, there were massive changes to the Earth caused by Earth’s passage through the Taurid meteor shower. Comets struck the ice caps, melting them, global temperatures rose abruptly, and massive torrents of water were released from melting ice and glaciers. However, once the Earth had settled into a new stable climate, great civilizations arose again everywhere on Earth.
Earth will once again pass through the core of the Taurid meteor stream in both 2032 and 2036. Bibhu Dev Misra predicts that our current civilization will almost certainly be destroyed by the battering that Earth will receive.
This destruction will have been amplified by our many recent wars and the devastating effects of burning fossil fuels. The Kali Yuga is said to end by fire, and this understanding is certainly in alignment with the imminent temperature rises predicted by climate scientists, rises that are already fueling huge conflagrations across the planet
The years 2025 to 2040 will be our end times. Clearly, many will die from natural disasters and the collapse of our civilization’s life support systems. The survivors will be the few who have lived according to the precepts of higher consciousness. They will be guided to safe locations amidst the destruction.
For these few, the darkness of the Kali Yuga will have created the greatest human challenge of the entire Yuga cycle, the challenge of holding true to a spiritual path in the midst of great spiritual corruption. The Kali Yuga will have created opportunities to develop the will necessary to walk a spiritual path despite material temptation. There will have been myriad chances to practice tolerance and equanimity in the face of anger, frustration, violence and ignorance. And as the destruction on Earth continues, the survivors’ reality will be so drastically altered that they will be forced to reflect upon the old ways of life and patterns of thought that have not been in alignment with spiritual truth. They will start to discard the influences of the Kali Yuga and try to harmonize more closely with the coming age of higher consciousness.
At the very end of the Kali Yuga there will also be divine help in the appearance of the Kalki Avatar, a manifestation of Christ consciousness. The Kalki Avatar appears at times of great planetary crisis when society is torn apart by selfish, violent forces. This Avatar will re-establish the dharma, or spiritual truth, and inaugurate new ways of living that are in harmony with a higher spiritual awareness.
Bibhu Dev Misra tells us that during the long transition period, the planetary vibrations will be powerful, allowing rapid shifts in consciousness with little effort. This will be a welcome change from the heavy, cloying darkness of the Kali Yuga, and will allow the suffering of the transition times to prompt the awakening that is necessary for humanity to embrace a new reality. Humans will have to use the love, wisdom and intuition of their hearts to guide them through the planetary chaos and towards alignment with the coming Dwapara Yuga.
As time goes by, the newly cleansed Earth will enhance the purification of the minds of the survivors and their descendants, and they will become the seed of the new humanity that will inhabit the 1200-year transition to the spiritual light of the Dwapara Yuga. They will be the progenitors of the race that will eventually embrace the spiritual laws of the next Satya Yuga, the longed-for Golden Age.
The Dwapara Yuga will be an age based on elevated spiritual principles. It will be the first of the two Yugas (the second is the Tatra Yuga) that finally culminate in the Satya Yuga, the pinnacle of human consciousness. Over that vast time span we will come to know increasing peace, joy, virtue, health, strength and wisdom. Lifespan, physical stature and intellect will all increase. Various technologies will appear, but they will be in harmony with the Earth, the environment and the human spirit. Tremendous powers will be discovered, but they will be invested in humans rather than machines. Minds will become so pure that the various powers of the yoga siddhis will become available to the spiritually accomplished. This will enable possibilities such as traveling across dimensions, instantaneously manifesting matter, and building enormous monuments. The unlimited potential within each person will gradually be unlocked so that we can live happy, harmonious, meaningful lives.
By the time of the Satya Yuga, we will have recognized that the Source is One, and will have come to practice a single religion.
Bibhu Dev Misra’s predictions, based on both ancient manuscripts and modern sciences, follow the same pattern as almost all other prophecies and predictions for humanity’s upcoming times. Like them, he shows that we are currently in an age of great material success paired with immense spiritual emptiness, and predicts that our current civilization will be destroyed by planetary cataclysms. This will lead to a time of transition where our suffering will prompt a transformation to a much higher consciousness. The change will be so great that it will eventually lead us to a Golden Age and a great flowering of spiritual awareness.
What is different about the predictions arising from the Yuga cycle is the understanding that similar events have happened before, and will happen again. The Yuga teaching tells us that humanity is embedded within an eternal cycle that, over huge spans of time, weaves back and forth between ages of greater awareness, and ages of lesser awareness. Even as we achieve the far-off Golden Age, we will know that nothing stands still, and at some point our consciousness will start to devolve into darkness again, only to start the long journey back to the light.
Why is this our destiny? Perhaps it’s because without light, we cannot know darkness, and without darkness, we cannot know light.
