What has driven us to create our own collapse?
At this point in time it seems inevitable that climate chaos will soon be so severe that our current global civilization will not survive the destruction. This seems to be an emerging consensus among climate scientists.
But the climate is not changing because of the natural processes of the earth. It is changing because of the actions of humans. We have literally engineered the impending collapse of our own life support systems, both natural and human-made. And we knew 50 years ago that we were on course to create this catastrophic damage, and yet we have barely changed our ways.
Why? This section looks at the human characteristics that have led us to self-destruction, even though we have had more than adequate notice about what was needed to avoid this fate.
In particular, it looks at the qualities of our animal nature as the driving force behind our inability to rein in our acquisitiveness, act with foresight, and plan for the future.
Do You Know What Six Degrees Really Means?
The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is currently approaching 430 parts per million. The last time there was this level of CO2 in the atmosphere was during the Oligocene era, 23 to 33 million years ago, eons before humanity appeared on Earth. During that era, global average temperatures were 5 to 7 degrees Centigrade above our current historical average. It’s … Continue reading →
Capitalism is a Psychopath
Capitalism is proudly touted by its adherents as the most ideal economic system the world has ever seen. But can that actually be true when it is the very system that is ushering us into the possibility of our own extinction? The beginnings of capitalism emerged around 500 years ago within the highly patriarchal, alpha-male-dominated and stratified culture of Europe. … Continue reading →
This Changes Everything You Thought You Knew About Climate Change
In his deeply personal book, Going Dark, professor and leading authority on abrupt climate change, Guy McPherson, fully acknowledges the already-predicted catastrophes of climate change, and then adds some that are not generally known or acknowledged. As he says, The Great Dying wiped out at least 90% of the species on Earth due to an abrupt rise in global-average temperature … Continue reading →
My Heart is Breaking for Baby Boys
My heart is breaking for baby boys. They need infinitely more love and tenderness than they actually get, and the absence of that essential care leaves a lifelong scar on their hearts and souls. Recent studies show that baby boys are born with measurably less emotional resilience than baby girls. In fact, their right brains, which are the mediators of … Continue reading →
Not seen, not loved. A Normal Western Childhood
As babies and children, we need to be seen, and we need to be loved. These are our most primal and most essential needs. They trump all other emotional and spiritual requirements. What does it mean to be seen and loved? It means being seen for who and what we actually are. It means being loved unconditionally as this true … Continue reading →
What is it with men? A Compassionate Investigation
Men commit almost all the violence against others on Earth. Around 90% of convicted murderers are men. The great majority of those sexually assaulting children are men. Most rapists are men. The majority of domestic violence perpetrators are men. All despots and architects of genocide throughout history have been men. And in the killing fields of war, almost all soldiers … Continue reading →
Living in a Split Screen Reality
As a Holocene child, I grew up on a bountiful, infinite Earth. She showered us with sun and rain, soil and food, trees and wood, leather and cloth, metal and oil – everything we could possibly need for health and happiness and ease. She freely offered us all of the riches from the vast treasure chest of her being. It … Continue reading →
When God was Banished from Earth. A Fable for These Times
Once upon a time, humans roamed the Earth, plucking all their sustenance from her ever-fertile fields and forests and waters. As they foraged for their food, their shelter and their clothing among the living beings of the Earth, her plants, animals, birds and water creatures, they noticed that there was more to Earth than just her physical forms. It started … Continue reading →
The Fatal Flaws of Capitalism
In the Western world, and in fact in most of the world today, our economic system is based on the ideas and ideals of capitalism. It’s the economic water we swim in, so close to our living breathing bodies that we can barely pull back far enough to look objectively at what it actually is. And it doesn’t help that … Continue reading →
We are Living the Zombie Apocalypse
A recent study found that almost 20% of California’s forests are now ‘zombie forests’. What’s a zombie forest? It’s a forest growing in a climate that has become too warm and dry for new saplings to establish themselves. Mature trees, with their deep roots, can hold on for a time, but when they die, they are not replaced. Regeneration of … Continue reading →
A Bubble in the Making – the World Financial System
Various prophecies predict the collapse of the world financial system in the foreseeable future. How would such a collapse come about? I’m no economist, and only moderately versed in financial matters, but here is a possible future scenario that I see. As we all know, the climate is changing, driven by increasing CO2 emissions and a steadily rising average global … Continue reading →
The Levels of Human Consciousness. Where are we now, where are we going
In my travels through the more esoteric spiritual writings, I have come across two authors who delineate various levels of human consciousness. Both describe a hierarchy of ever-expanding awareness from the most basic animal level to the most enlightened. Ultimately of course, there are no hierarchies. All states of consciousness simply are what they are, and all humans simply inhabit … Continue reading →
We Cannot Solve Climate Change at the Level it Was Created
I’m going to start this blog with a provocative statement. The climate crisis has not been created by the burning of fossils fuels, but by the level of consciousness that continues to burn them. So what is this ‘level of consciousness’ that I am talking about? From antiquity until today, the understanding of most spiritual traditions has been that there … Continue reading →
The Forecast was Catastrophe … and then Nothing Changed
Forty years ago, the basics of atmospheric CO2, global warming and climate change were pretty much settled, even if the details were still to be refined. Since then, thousands of suggestions, ideas, plans, research papers and petitions have been created presenting methods for addressing the eventual climate chaos. These smart, reasonable and scientifically-verified ideas have been praised, circulated, approved, accepted … Continue reading →
When the Animals Run the Farm
How did we get here? How have we orchestrated our own possible extinction on a climate-wrecked planet? Why have we not acted on decades of sober advice about where we were heading? And why, now that we’re on the brink of climate collapse and the collapse of life on earth, are we not taking every conceivable step to ward off … Continue reading →
The Animal Within
What we are as human beings can be viewed from many different perspectives. Each perspective sees our entirety through a different lens, in the process creating its own particular differentiations and insights. I have recently been pondering the implications of a system that divides us into just two parts, the body and the soul (as distinct from the more traditional … Continue reading →
