The Hopi Prophecies. An Extraordinary Heritage
The Hopi are a tiny Native American tribe living in the Four Corners area of the United Sates. But their small numbers belie an extraordinary heritage, a great, elaborate and world-shaking set of prophecies that they have faithfully kept alive as an oral tradition for almost a thousand years. The prophecies were given to them around 1100 A.D. but refer to events only from the 16th Century onwards, events that would have been beyond the comprehension of the original prophecy-bearers, but were nevertheless faithfully and accurately repeated for all of that time.
The prophecies were given to the Hopi by the legendary Masaaw, who greeted them when they arrived at their present homeland. Masaaw was and still is understood as a guardian and spokesperson for the Creator. He gave them the right to settle on their desert land, and also transmitted the laws governing correct relationship with the Earth. In addition he gave the verbal prophecies which were also represented as symbols on a small clay tablet. This tablet is still in the possession of the Hopi today. However, it has a missing corner, which is said to be held by Pahanna, the true white brother who will return at the beginning of the Fifth Epoch, the next age of humanity.
The laws regarding correct relationship with the Earth and the prophecies themselves are two sides of the same message. The Hopi were told that they needed to live simply and in harmony with the Earth, and to honor and respect her as their mother. They understood that the Earth was a sensitive living entity like themselves, and that they were made of her flesh. They were also told that if they became greedy and materialistic, and started to pillage and hoard the treasures of the Earth, then they and all humanity would be destroyed in a great Earthly convulsion.
They were told that this had already happened three times before, and that those three Epochs had ended because humanity had initially started out in harmony with the Earth, but had become materialistic and violent, bringing on themselves their own destruction by fire, then ice, then flood. This happened because cataclysmic events in the natural world are causally connected with negative human actions.
All humans are sacred beings, meant to take care of the Earth and enjoy her bounty. We are not separate from the planet, but an integral part of her functioning. We cannot disregard the natural order, make our own laws, and enforce them with weapons. If we care for the Earth, she will generously take care of us. But many have forgotten these eternal truths.
The prophecies the Hopi were given were about the planet-wide destructive events that would bring an end to the Fourth Epoch, the one we are living in now. These prophecies were imparted as a warning for the Hopi to stay faithful to their simple lifestyle and the honoring and care of the Earth, because even though the Fourth Epoch would definitely end, their actions and those of all humanity would make a difference to the exact nature and timing of the ending.
They were also given freedom to embrace whatever life they wanted, whether a simple traditional one, or a life tempted by materialism. However, the more faithfully they lived the traditional life, the less severe would be the destruction of the Earth and her peoples. They were warned that the greater the materialism, the more likely would be the complete extinction of humanity except for the ‘brother and sister’ who would initiate the following Fifth Epoch.
After Masaaw gave them the prophecies and rules for right living on the Earth, the Hopi took on the profound responsibility for the harmony and correct operation of the planet, not just for themselves, but for all of humanity. They maintained that harmony faithfully over the centuries with a complex set of sacred dances and rituals based around the seasons of every year. This is their reverent gift to us and to the Earth.
So what are the actual events that were contained within the prophecies?
They start in the 16th Century with the predicted arrival of the Spanish, who reached Hopi lands in 1540. The Spanish immediately began a brutal campaign to convert the Hopi to Christianity, which did not surprise the Hopi. The prophecies instructed them to remain peaceful, and apart from the killing of one priest, which finally drove the missionaries out, they did so. But they vowed never again to allow their own sacred practices to be replaced by Christianity.
They also correctly predicted the arrival of the white race, which began to trickle into Hopi villages in the 1820’s. This was the beginning of what eventually became a determined campaign to convert the Hopi to the white way of life, to take possession of their lands, and to stamp out everything that was sacred to them. Over the 200 years since then, tragically the whites have largely succeeded, and only a very few Hopi remain who practice the simple, traditional way of life. Many dances no longer occur, and most of those who were the faithful carriers of the prophecies are dead. The prophecies said that all of this would happen.
They also predicted the crisscrossing of the continent by ‘snakes of iron’, presumably the railroads, by ‘spiderwebs’, presumably telephone lines, and ’rivers of stone’, presumably the interstate highways. The prophecies also foretold air travel, World War I, World War II, the deployment of the atom bomb and oil spills in our oceans. They predicted the visit by the Dalai Lama to the Hopi in the 1970’s.
They also said that young people who ‘wear their hair long like the Hopi’ would come and sit at the feet of the elders. This event fulfilled an instruction for the Hopi to reveal their hitherto-secret prophecies as a warning to the world as the Earth neared the end of the Fourth Epoch. This warning has also been made available in books. This handful of books have been written by white men sympathetic to and carefully selected by the Hopi.
Up to this time, every event that was prophesied has come true. This is an extraordinary record, and it gives us great confidence that the two or three closely-linked events still to play out before the end of the Fourth Epoch have a very high probability of occurring.
The prophecy states that a dwelling place above the Earth (thought to be the International Space Station) will crash to Earth, appearing as a blue star. After that, the Hopi ceremonies will cease. The complete abandonment of the dances will lead to an Earth that is wildly out of balance, creating great planetary destruction and purification.
The purification will be accomplished both by the Earth herself and unwittingly by humanity. Humanity will instigate a third world war, with the white race waging war on other people in other lands. Atomic weapons will be used, and apart from the lands of the Hopi, the United States will be destroyed and many will die of radiation poisoning. Meanwhile the Earth will give rise to earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, changing of seasons and weather, winds, tornados, wildfires, droughts, disappearance of wildlife, and famines. Those people with materialistic hearts will decrease, while those with good hearts who live in harmony with the Earth will be spared, until the Earth is rid of wrongdoing.
This ‘purification’ will almost certainly wipe out our current way of life, along with much of humanity and most other living species on the planet. It will truly be a sixth extinction event.
However, the prophecies do not end there.
They tell us that soon after the purification ends, Pahanna, the true white brother will appear with the missing corner of the prophecy-recording clay tablet. The coming of Pahanna will bring the dawn of the Fifth Epoch.
Pahanna will break open the tablet, along with three other tablets from the time of Masaaw, and this will unify all wisdom circles around the world. It will plant the seeds of wisdom in people’s hearts, seeds that are already being sown as the Fourth Epoch comes to an end. Pahanna will usher in teachings from the Creator on how to live long and prosper in harmony with the Earth. Like the Ancient Fathers, people will dedicate their lives to the laws of the Creator, with bodies and minds filled with wisdom and truth. They will understand the balance of Earth and Life, and the forces controlling the relationship of Life and Nature.
All people will then live in peace and harmony with each other, and with the Earth, knowing the Oneness of All That Exists.
