A Tibetan Prophecy from the 8th Century. Padmasambhava Speaks
It was in the 8th Century that Padmasambhava, an enlightened Buddhist teacher from India, traveled to Tibet to impart the spiritual wisdom that became the foundation of Tibetan Buddhism, a sacred practice that flourishes to this day.
Remarkably, those teachings included prophecies and guidance about our current times, the years 2024 to 2034. These prophecies were designed not so much to become an oral or written tradition, as to enter the soul awareness of Padmasambhava’s disciples so that they could be rediscovered in future lifetimes.
As intended, over time the prophecies were again revealed, and a contemporary Tibetan Buddhist teacher, His Holiness Khenchen Lama Rinpoche, has gathered and integrated the prophecies from four different texts, one from the 16th Century, one from the 19th, and two from the 21st.
In the prophecies, 2024 and 2025 are seen as years of destruction in the west and northwest. (It seems that this prediction may refer to the current wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, which respectively lie west and northwest of Tibet.) The wars were predicted to continue through 2026 and 2027 when there would be even more fighting. (And indeed, neither war shows any sign of peaceful resolution at this point.)
It was also said that these wars will be preceded by environmental decline, specifically landslides, floods, earthquakes and unusual animal behavior. (As we know only too well, climate change has been producing all these effects for decades.)
The conflicts of these years however are just the beginning. 2030 to 2034, which the texts emphasize, will be years of intense war and hell-like conditions. These will be times of such large-scale detrimental change that people will go insane, not knowing what to do.
2030 will usher in the hellish conditions. It will be a year of devastating large-scale conflict, famine and despair. The war will be prompted by greed, and will include the use of dultrun gotson, which likely refers to nuclear weapons. There will be fighting in all four directions – in the east, west, north and south. There will be soldiers everywhere from many different countries. All countries will endure great suffering as they destroy one another.
In 2032, the fighting, already widespread and intense, will escalate even further in every direction. There will be apocalyptic events, with lakes turning red from blood, and world-wide famine …. many cities will be bombed, smoke rising in the air everywhere to the extent that it will not be possible to see the sun …. human bodies (will be) decaying everywhere .… there will be no joy, peace or happiness, only suffering and anger, almost all the world will be destroyed.
(From these words we can surmise that our current civilization may be almost totally obliterated by 2034, the planet largely a smoking ruin.)
Unlike other prophecies for our times, Padmasambhava’s prophecies do not address the years after 2034, and it seems that his purpose was not so much to tell us about these devastating wars and their aftermath, but to give us guidance about how to avoid them in the first place.
How can we do this?
The texts tell us that during 2024, all people everywhere, Buddhist and non-Buddhist, should make the utmost effort to come together and practice compassion, kindness and love. They should cultivate wisdom, engage in virtuous behaviors, and avoid negative actions. People of good will from all religions should pray together for world peace. Leaders and governments should respect people and take care of the world, especially the environment and all non-humans who inhabit it, including the spirits of the Earth.
Padmasambhava let his disciples know that they should have no doubts that doing Guru Rinpoche prayers, stupas and putting up prayer flags can stop war, famine and enable world peace…
He described in great detail many more actions that Buddhists and non-Buddhists can engage in to promote world peace, too many to include in this post. Those who are curious can find his guidance in pages 6-9 of the article referred to above by His Holiness Khenchen Lama Rinpoche.
The texts let us know that humanity has a choice about whether or not the terrible events predicted actually do occur. We are told that we absolutely do have the power to avert the wars that will otherwise break out. This is the power of wisdom, virtue, love and compassion expressed through deed and prayer.
